My Story
I was just 9 years old, when I knocked on my first door to sell. My parents had just taken me to the bank with my $25 net worth and promised to match it when I opened up a savings account. I now had $50 and was excited to start a life of earning. My memory is foggy for how the idea formed in my head, but I’m sure I looked at my skill set and chose the most profitable one: weeding yards.

We grew up in a hard-working house where we often had chores to go out and weed in the summer. It seemed like no one ever wanted to do this, including me most of the time, but the finished result always looked a lot better than before! So, with my parents help, I found a good price point, threw some yard tools in a wheelbarrow and headed to a couple neighbors to knock on their doors. They were very friendly and promised to pay me $5—once a week—to come and weed for an hour. I told them what day I would come, and that’s when I started learning the power of a consistent source of money. By the end of the summer, after having spent some, I still had $200 in my bank account and for a 9-year-old, I felt rich!
Fast forward a few years and business ideas later, I was required to take a high school class on financial literacy. Little did I know the profound impact it would have! In that class, we read a book called the 4 laws of Financial Prosperity. In it, I was introduced to the idea of compound interest, stocks, and the time value of money. I was hooked, and I didn’t even profess to like reading at the time. (that’s about when that changed for me). I immediately became enthralled with the idea, and had to get my hands on such a powerful tool for myself. So, after talking to my dad, I invested all I could into an amazon stock and he covered the rest. (they were about $1600 per stock at the time). Eventually, I paid him for the rest and owned my very own stock. I was making money work for me without having to even do anything! Around this same time, I became interest in a YouTuber financial advisor. With his advice, I bought some more books (including Dave Ramsey’s “Total Money Makeover”), and invested in a few more stocks. Then, soon left to serve a proselyting mission for my church. When I came home, most of them had almost doubled in value!
My savings lasted me a little while, but soon I had spent all my savings on my previous mission, school, and an auto detailing business. Every summer, I worked like crazy to save so I could pay for school without going into debt, but it felt like the odds weren’t in my favor. I had some car trouble, and even a few car recks, and my plans to serve in the military were denied for health reasons. Despite, all that went wrong, I also was majorly blessed the entire time. While going to school, I met my wonderful wife. My parents offered to lend me money, interest free, to pay for a ring, and some car troubles. And I learned some valuable lessons about using an exact, zero-based budget from my wife. I, like you, am on my financial journey for freedom. I have been blessed to be certified through Dave Ramsey’s Financial Coach Master Training, and I am continuing my learning through pursuing a degree in business finance at UVU.
